The HfMT in Hamburg offers not only a comprehensive education geared towards becoming a professional musician, but also the freedom and inspiration to develop your own musical identity. The goal of the program is to prepare you with the necessary skills and versatility required to be a successful professional musician. These skills are: confidence in playing and understanding various styles, openness and inspiration for music from other cultures, mastering the software and hardware knowledge for music production and live performance, management and marketing, and the know how needed to utilize this knowledge in today’s popular music scene.

In order to completely understand the music production process, each student follows the creation of a musical work from composition and arranging to the final studio recording.

The HfMT is closely connected with the NDR Big Band.

Students have the opportunity to actively work on compositions and arrangements with the Big Band. Several of the NDR musicians are professors in the HfMT. All of the professors in the jazz department are established international artists, and can be a mentor in the technical aspects of their instrument, as well as a role model for the activities in the jazz scene.

An der Jazzabteilung gibt es, dank der Unterstützung der Dr. E. A. Langner Stiftung, zwei neue Hauptfächer, in denen man den Abschluß "Bachelor of Music"  in Jazz und jazzverwandte Musik absolvieren kann. Bis zum 1. April kann man sich zum WS 10/11 (zusätzlich zu den bisherigen Hauptfächern) bewerben für:

• Jazzgesang

• Perkussion 

Seit dem WS 09/10 kann man an der HfMT Hamburg nun endlich auch einen Masterstudiengang in Jazzkomposition absolvieren. Der neue Master dauert 4 Semester. Das Hauptfach Jazzkomposition wird von Prof. Wolf Kerschek gelehrt. Hinzu kommen wechselnde Workshops bei international renommierten Jazzkomponisten, Praxis-Projekte mit der NDR-Big Band, sowie Wahlmodule aus der Klassischen Komposition, Multimedia-Komposition sowie Filmmusik-Komposition.

Bis zum 1. April müssen eingereicht werden:

3 Werke mit unterschiedlichen Besetzungen

(Solo, Combo, Big Band, Orchester, Jazzorchester Kompositionen und/oder Arrangements) aus dem Stilbereich Jazz und jazzverwandte Musik in Partitur und Tonaufnahme.

Bewerbungsvorraussetzung:

Abschluß eines Bachelor, Diplom oder äquivalentem Studium im Bereich Instrumental Jazz, Instrumental Klassik oder Schulmusik (Schwerpunkt Jazz).
